Introducing Pixel Pioneers

I couldn’t be more excited to announce that I’m launching my own conference! Pixel Pioneers is a brand new series of events, featuring world class advice from the brightest minds in web design and development, at a price you can afford, especially if you’re a freelancer or work in a small agency, or a student and at the beginning of your career. Pixel Pioneers will travel around the UK and bring inspirational and practical talks  —  and fun!  —  straight to you, so your budget won’t take a big hit.

The inaugural event is a one-day conference and will take place in Bristol in the southwest of England on 22 June. Speakers include data vis wizard Nadieh Bremer, Bristol’s own Joe Leech, and email hacker extraordinaire Mark Robbins.

I’ve lived in the beautiful city of Bath (15 minutes from Bristol) for more than 10 years, and I’ve always wanted to run an event here and give something back to the community, which is absolutely vibrant. BOOM, it’s happening!

Belfast, by the way, also has an amazing community but they haven’t got a web conference at the moment, so I’m bringing Pixel Pioneers to them in November, too. The call for speakers is open now.

Do you want to join me on an adventure to discover the future of the web? Welcome on board!

Our approach

A few years ago HTML5 and CSS3 was pretty much all you’ve heard at a web conference. It’s a very different picture today, and Pixel Pioneers reflects that. The events are organised and curated by me, and as I’m an editor and content consultant, my approach is a very editorial one. I will source the best experts in their fields to give inspiring and, crucially, practical presentations to help you become better at what you do.

Pixel Pioneers will cover the hottest topics in web design and front-end development (eg CSS and JavaScript, user experience, interaction and user interface design, web performance, data visualisations, content strategy, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, ecommerce, accessibility and inclusive design, better workflows, as well as the often neglected business side of things, and much more).

However, conferences are more than just a great opportunity to hear about the latest cutting edge trends, tools and techniques from the industry’s brightest speakers. Of course you get that at Pixel Pioneers events as well, and wherever I take Pixel Pioneers, the lineup will always feature a mix of amazing international and local talent. But I also want to offer a ton of networking opportunities, which include various side events and a Slack channel that every attendee and speaker gets access to and that I will moderate before and after the event to facilitate conversations around the topics that are important to you.

Here’s what you get for your conference ticket:

  • Eight practical sessions with actionable takeaways
  • Goodie bag packed with useful swag from us and our partners
  • Access to an exclusive Pixel Pioneers Slack channel
  • First dibs on limited tickets for workshops and side events
  • Discounts at local cafes and restaurants
  • After-party with free drinks
  • Exclusive access to conference videos and slide decks within two weeks of the event

More than just a conference

I’m committed to helping you become better at your work. The events are one thing. The Pixel Pioneers publishing platform is another one. Pixel Pioneers will publish practical and inspiring content throughout the year. We have a blog that we will update regularly and that we welcome guest authors for. We also publish a newsletter that will be packed with resources, handpicked by me, and that will keep you up to date on the latest Pixel Pioneers news, discounts and offers.

I’m not only passionate about building an accessible and inclusive web, I’m also dedicated to building diverse speaker lineups and a diverse audience. I will therefore work with diversity initiatives to let them know about the events and our open call for speakers and also provide them with discounted tickets for underrepresented groups in tech. In addition, Pixel Pioneers Bristol will be an #upfront event, which means we’ll invite audience members to share the stage during talks, so they can experience what it feels like to be on stage and become less nervous about getting into public speaking themselves.

Of course I can’t pull this all off completely on my own, so I welcome partners to support the events and make them happen. A partnership is a great opportunity to directly reach out to unique, vibrant communities in the web industry, who will — I’m absolutely sure — love it, if you help us put on side events, sponsor the coffee and other refreshments, or throw a party. If that sounds like you and you’d like to get involved, drop me a line!

We couldn’t live in a more exciting time. The web — not even 30 years old — is ubiquitous, but the underlying technology is more complicated than ever before. Things develop at a dizzying speed. Pixel Pioneers aims to make sense of it all. Let’s celebrate the unique creativity and culture of our community. Let’s come together to share ideas and the tips and tricks that we have discovered. After all, the true pixel pioneers are you.
